Suno asked a federal court in Massachusetts to dismiss a class action brought by Jason Isbell, David Lowery and two other musicians over the use of artists' names and alleged voice imitation. Suno argues that describing musical style with an artist's name is protected speech and that federal copyright law preempts the state-law claims. The court has not ruled, and the case does not assert copyright infringement.
Alphabet shareholder Phil Rosen filed a derivative lawsuit against Sundar Pichai and 12 other company leaders, alleging Google trained AI systems including its Lyria music models on copyrighted works. Because Rosen brought the case on Alphabet’s behalf, any damages recovered would go to the company rather than him. The filing adds a shareholder-governance challenge to ongoing disputes over AI training.
The Music Artists Coalition joined Cate Blanchett and CAA on an AI licensing brief in The New York Times’ copyright case against OpenAI. Separately, RIAA, NMPA, ASCAP, BMI and five other music organizations filed a proposed brief backing the plaintiffs. The filings place music-industry groups inside a broader test of licensing arguments for AI systems.
Suno filed an opposition to Apple’s request to block a deposition subpoena in its copyright dispute with Universal Music Group and Sony Music. The company is seeking testimony on Apple’s label negotiations, the commercial role of major-label catalogs, streaming fraud, and communications about Suno, arguing that those topics bear on its fair-use and copyright-misuse defenses; the court has not yet ruled.
Suno introduced a beta Model Context Protocol connector that lets users create, extend, cover, or remix songs from supported AI assistants including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The connector is available through an early-access signup on all Suno plans, uses the user’s existing credits, and saves generated tracks to their Suno library; Suno’s separate developer API remains in beta.
Universal Music Group reported €3.394 billion in Q3 2026 revenue, up 11.7%, while CEO Lucian Grainge argued during the earnings call that streaming services should not compensate low-value AI-generated music on the same basis as human-made work. The remarks link UMG’s financial results to a call for changes in how platforms allocate streaming payments as AI uploads increase.
